Dirt Cups

Summer is coming to an end.  In just one week, Caleb will be starting kindergarten and the following week Bella will begin preschool.  Three mornings a week, it will just be Drew and me.  I am wondering what my life will look and feel like as we enter into this new chapter.  Will it be quieter?  Will my house be cleaner?  Will I miss them like crazy?  Will I love the break?  Will we have mornings of battles and breakdowns? Will I be able to get them dressed and ready and to school on time?  Will they make friends?  Will they love school?  Will they willingly release our intertwined hands?  Will I want to hold on longer?  Will they want another hug?  Will I be able to let go?  Will they be okay?  Will I?
The what ifs, the unknown, that’s the hardest part.  I know in about a month, we will all be adjusted to our new routine and we will all the okay.  But for now, I am a little emotional and that’s okay too.
In honor of my soon to be kindergartner and preschooler, I am posting their very favorite thing we made all summer – DIRT CUPS!
Dirt Cups
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar
2 (3.5 ounce) packages instant chocolate pudding mix
3 1/2 cups milk
1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
1 1/2 packages of Oreos
Place cookies in food processor.
and chop until fine crumbs.

****Warning**** food processor may scare small children!!!

Place Oreo crumbs in a separate bowl and reserve for later.
Put butter, cream cheese and sugar in food processor.
Mix until smooth.  Set aside.
Pour the milk into a large bowl and add the pudding mixes.
Whisk to combine.
Fold in the whipped topping
until combined.
Stir in the cream cheese mixture.
Arrange cookie crumbs, pudding mixture and gummy worms for assembly.
Layer in a clear 9 ounce cup, starting with cookies then cream mixture.
Repeat layers, ending with crumbs on top.
Top with gummy worms.
Chill until ready to serve.
Enjoy!

It doesn't matter how old I get or how many times I've had this dessert. 'Dirt' is fantastic and addictive. I may have been known to eat a whole entire batch myself…mmm…dirt.

That made me want to cry. My daughter so amazing! Not only are you a star in the kitchen you are a fantastic writer. This blog is adorable, poor baby Drew Boo:( Bella and Caleb look adorable as usual. I won't be making the dirt cups any time soon, but one of these days I'll have all my six grandchildren over and we'll make their favorite summer treat.

Allie I just love you…. one minute I am weeping over your sharing the very same emotions I am feeling in Avery starting kindergarten and the next minute I am getting side stiches from the priceless picture and blurb about poor Drew! Hilarious! And yummo! We will have to try those!

This is a treat anyone can't help but love! Even us big kids! Your little ones are so cute – they must of had a ball making – and eating these.

      Allie says:

Whipped Cream should work. You may want to whip it a little more stiff than usual so it doesn’t get to soft. Let me know how it goes :)

Thanks for sharing your recipe! Did you take out the “creme” filling in the oreos before you put them in the food processor? Or did you throw the whole thing in?

About how far in advance can you make the pudding mixture?  We are having a birthday party tomorrow and I was trying to lighten my daytime load by making the mixture today.  Would it work?

When I try to layer the cookie crumbs, static cling makes them jump and cling to the side of the plastic cup. I have tried slightly wetting the side of the cups, but it didn’t help. Is there something I can do to stop this from happening to create a neater appearance?
